The cheating manager, also known as AJ Hinch, and his quickly rebuilding Tigers are set to take on the Orioles for a three-game set from beautiful Oriole Park at Camden Yards beginning tonight.
These three games will culminate the season series between these two, a series in which both the Tigers and O’s have won twice.
The Birds will see a few of the same arms from last time they met the Tigers in Casey Mize, Tarik Skrubal, and Matt Manning. The Orioles will send out Keegan Akin, Matt Harvey, and John Means.
Like we saw before, Casey Mize is the crowned jewel of that Detroit team. Mize shut down the Orioles’ lineup on the way to a seven-inning outing. However, with the Orioles set to pitch Harvey and Means in this series, that production can be matched.
After this previous series with the Tampa Bay Rays, it is pretty easy to see what needs to be improved. Our ❌-Factors for this series will explain it all!
The first, and beyond the most obvious, is the bullpen as a whole. The bullpen has been responsible for more losses since the All-Star Break than my two hands can count. However, it is still that same bullpen that will make or break the Orioles in this series. Let’s face it, the Tigers are just not the Rays; not even remotely close. The bullpen HAS to take advantage of hitters on this Tigers team with less plate discipline. The bullpen allowed 14 walks in the last series alone. The main part is throwing strikes early and often, something this bullpen has not done very well.
The next ❌-Factor in this series is speed. Believe it or not, the Orioles may be one of the quicker teams in the A.L., especially after the acquisition of Jorge Mateo. A good way to get to Mize in this first game is to make him worried when we are on base. Mullins, Mateo, and Martin are all guys, who if they reach base, need to be taking the free bags. Those extra runs created by these players, who are capable of stealing bases, will be needed. Even Ryan McKenna, who may make some appearances in this series, needs to utilize his speed to an advantage.
Make sure to tune into a battle of two clubs on the rise starting tonight at 7:05 p.m. ET! Every game will be available on MASN and the flagship station of the O’s, 105.7 The Fan.
