While the Baltimore Orioles celebrated a 6-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night, the front office decided it was time to make a deal.
The Orioles have traded right-hander Dean Kremer to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for outfield prospect Jhomnardo Reyes.
A former trade deadline acquisition himself, Kremer originally came to Baltimore in 2018 as part of the deal that sent Manny Machado to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Kremer appeared in 133 games for the Orioles, posting a 42-44 record with a 4.37 ERA. He logged 707.2 innings, allowing 683 hits and 344 earned runs while striking out 616 batters.
This season, however, Kremer struggled in seven starts. He posted a 6.50 ERA across 36 innings, allowing 38 hits while walking 11 and striking out 38. He spent significant time on the injured list with a right quad strain and never regained his form after returning.
In return, the Orioles acquired 18-year-old outfielder Jhomnardo Reyes. The young prospect has appeared in 56 games between Rookie Ball and Low-A this season, slashing .272/.395/.489 with an .884 OPS.
Reyes has collected 49 hits, including 12 doubles, three triples and seven home runs. He has driven in 46 runs, stolen 17 bases and was ranked as the Twins’ No. 24 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The Dominican native is now the O’s No. 20 prospect.
At first glance, this move does not reveal whether the Orioles intend to buy or sell at the deadline. Kremer had struggled throughout the season, making him a logical trade candidate.
With plenty of time remaining before the August 3 deadline, the Orioles still have an opportunity to make more significant moves that will better define their direction.
