Trevor Rogers has experienced his fair share of trials and tribulations during his time in Baltimore.
However, it appears his time as an Oriole could be nearing its end, as he has expressed interest in testing the free agent market this offseason. This comes after two excellent seasons in which he established himself as one of the Orioles’ front-line starters.
Whether this is the end of his Baltimore tenure or simply another short chapter, let’s reflect on what the left-hander has brought to the organization.
Rogers was acquired by Baltimore from the Miami Marlins at the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers. His initial experience with the club did not go well, posting a 7.11 ERA across four starts before being sent down to Triple-A.
At the time, the Birds desperately needed starting rotation help, and it appeared Rogers would not provide much of it. He would not return to the big-league club for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Rogers missed the beginning of the 2025 season due to a right knee injury, but he eventually began showing why Orioles president of baseball operations and acting-GM Mike Elias had invested so much in acquiring him.
On May 24, 2025, Rogers was added to the O’s roster as the 27th man for a doubleheader and pitched 6.2 scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox, allowing just two hits without issuing a walk. That performance was no fluke, as it proved to be just one of many dominant outings from the crafty left-hander throughout the 2025 campaign.
He returned to the big-league club and reclaimed his spot in the starting rotation in June, quickly establishing himself as one of the few bright spots on a struggling O’s team. By the end of the season, Rogers had posted a 9–3 record with a 1.81 ERA and 103 strikeouts across 109.2 innings. Opponents managed just 70 hits and six home runs against him, demonstrating just how difficult he was to hit throughout the year.
Because of his incredible performance, Rogers won the 2025 Most Valuable Oriole Award, becoming the first pitcher to receive the honor since Rodrigo López in 2002.
Following his historic 2025 campaign, Rogers was named the O’s 2026 Opening Day starter. While he was unable to replicate the dominance he displayed the previous year, he still delivered a productive season, finishing with a 10–11 record, a 4.03 ERA and 157 strikeouts across 169.2 innings and 30 starts.
It is important to note that Rogers battled the flu for multiple weeks during the season, forcing him to miss time. Following his return, he also struggled for several weeks as he worked to regain his form. Despite those challenges, he still provided the Orioles with a substantial workload and remained an important piece of the rotation.
Across parts of three big-league seasons in an Orioles uniform, Rogers has posted a 19–16 record with a 3.41 ERA across 298.1 innings, striking out 272 batters in 52 starts. Those numbers demonstrate exactly why Rogers has earned the opportunity to test the free agency market.
“I earned the right to make it to free agency,” Rogers told The Baltimore Banner’s Andy Kostka following his final start.
While he appears excited about exploring what the market has to offer, the 28-year-old has also expressed interest in potentially returning to Baltimore. That interest appears to be mutual, as Mike Elias has indicated that he intends to pursue Rogers this offseason.
Deciding on Rogers’ future will be an important decision for the Orioles front office. His 2025 season demonstrated his potential to pitch at a Cy-Young-caliber level, while his 2026 campaign showed that he can handle a substantial workload while continuing to provide quality production.
Whatever decision lies ahead, Trevor Rogers has turned a difficult introduction to Baltimore into a chapter that Orioles fans will never forget.
