The Baltimore Orioles didn’t just win a series against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday; they may have changed the direction of their trade deadline plans.
After Tuesday night’s 14-0 loss, Baltimore looked like a team running out of time. Instead, they responded by rallying from seven runs down in Wednesday’s 10-9, 12-inning win to secure a series victory over a team right behind them in the American League Wild Card race.
The timing could not have been better.
With the 2026 trade deadline just around the corner, the Orioles have been stuck between buying and selling. They entered the series hanging around the Wild Card picture, but without much room for error.
Losing this series to Detroit would have made it much easier for president of baseball operations and acting-GM Mike Elias to justify moving expiring assets and focusing on next season. Instead, the Birds did the exact opposite and proved they can still beat quality competition.
The Orioles have now swept Houston, snapped Boston’s 15-game winning streak and taken a series from Detroit in less than two weeks. That is an impressive stretch against three clubs with legitimate postseason aspirations.
More importantly, Baltimore has continued to gain ground in the Wild Card race at a time when every game feels magnified. A week ago, the conversation centered around who the Orioles might sell. Now, the focus has shifted to whether they can add a piece or two by Monday’s 6 p.m. deadline.
Now, that does not mean the O’s should suddenly empty the farm system for a rental. This team still has flaws, and another right-handed bat and bullpen arm or two would make the lineup deeper and pitching staff more well-rounded.
But there is a difference between making a measured addition and waving the white flag. This series made it much harder to justify subtracting from a club that is still within striking distance of October.
Players know when a front office believes in them, and they also know when management has its eyes on next year. By fighting back after Tuesday’s embarrassment and taking the series, the Orioles gave its front office a legitimate reason to invest in this roster.
“Sometimes, it’s tough, I get it, from the fan base,” said O’s skipper Craig Albernaz to the media after Wednesday’s game. “But our guys don’t quit, they don’t give up. There is still a lot of season left. So, for us, we’re just trying to win every game and compete each day and see where we’re at at the end of the year. Like I said before, I like our guys, and I would bet on our guys.”
There is still a long way to go. The Wild Card race remains crowded, and the Orioles will have to continue winning against good teams to stay in the mix.
But this series felt bigger than just two wins out of three. It may have been the series that convinced the front office this season is still worth chasing.
