The Baltimore Orioles didn’t just win a series against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday; they may have changed the direction of their trade deadline plans.

After Tuesday night’s 14-0 loss, Baltimore looked like a team running out of time. Instead, they responded by rallying from seven runs down in Wednesday’s 10-9, 12-inning win to secure a series victory over a team right behind them in the American League Wild Card race.

The timing could not have been better.

With the 2026 trade deadline just around the corner, the Orioles have been stuck between buying and selling. They entered the series hanging around the Wild Card picture, but without much room for error.

Losing this series to Detroit would have made it much easier for president of baseball operations and acting-GM Mike Elias to justify moving expiring assets and focusing on next season. Instead, the Birds did the exact opposite and proved they can still beat quality competition.

The Orioles have now swept Houston, snapped Boston’s 15-game winning streak and taken a series from Detroit in less than two weeks. That is an impressive stretch against three clubs with legitimate postseason aspirations.

More importantly, Baltimore has continued to gain ground in the Wild Card race at a time when every game feels magnified. A week ago, the conversation centered around who the Orioles might sell. Now, the focus has shifted to whether they can add a piece or two by Monday’s 6 p.m. deadline.

Now, that does not mean the O’s should suddenly empty the farm system for a rental. This team still has flaws, and another right-handed bat and bullpen arm or two would make the lineup deeper and pitching staff more well-rounded.

But there is a difference between making a measured addition and waving the white flag. This series made it much harder to justify subtracting from a club that is still within striking distance of October.

Players know when a front office believes in them, and they also know when management has its eyes on next year. By fighting back after Tuesday’s embarrassment and taking the series, the Orioles gave its front office a legitimate reason to invest in this roster.

“Sometimes, it’s tough, I get it, from the fan base,” said O’s skipper Craig Albernaz to the media after Wednesday’s game. “But our guys don’t quit, they don’t give up. There is still a lot of season left. So, for us, we’re just trying to win every game and compete each day and see where we’re at at the end of the year. Like I said before, I like our guys, and I would bet on our guys.”

There is still a long way to go. The Wild Card race remains crowded, and the Orioles will have to continue winning against good teams to stay in the mix.

But this series felt bigger than just two wins out of three. It may have been the series that convinced the front office this season is still worth chasing.

One response to “O’s series win over Tigers could impact deadline approach”

  1. I am a true believer in this team. They are a Baltimore Oriole Band of Brothers. They have always had grit and tenacity. Are they perfect, no, but they have true hearts who believe in the Team as a whole in each other. This win today against a tough team as was the last series is proof of their faith in the team. Despite, the players on the IL currently, the rest of them have banded together to make this run. They accept the temporary additions heartily and make it difficult to give up the newbies once the tried and true return. They have joy! You see it in the dugout. Yup, I am being quite syrupy about this, but I can’t help it. They cheer for each other. They practice hard, when plays are not quite right, they work on them til they are almost perfect. Pitching is the same…batting is the same…look at Holliday and Cowser, you don’t find more tenacity than that, they bat, they make plays until they get it right. Cowser has become a star Center Fielder, yah I loved Ceddy Mullins but Cowser has proven he is our center fielder. Holliday has mastered just about the “small ball” with the occasional homerun. You have our catchers, Rutsch (my #1 player) and Sammy, both on the IL currently (hopefully short stints) who are premier batters not just catchers. Pozo and Tromp are doing commendable jobs as temporary catcher replacements. We have a spectacular infield headed by Gunnar Henderson, one of the best SS in the MLB with our Polar Bear at 1st as the 2nd in command there, another Gold Glove. We have infield spares in Blaze Alexander (currently on the IL) who can pretty much play anywhere on the field and he always plays with joy. We have Coby Mayo, Jeremiah Jackson and Christian Encarnacion-Strand for spares, how lucky did we get with CES. The rest of the outfield with Leody, Taylor, TO, Beavs….how lucky are we!!!! And look at our pitching, the relievers rank as a whole bullpen, one of the best in the league and our starters are also some of the best. Do they have bad days, sure! They all do… I also believe in the managers: Albie (who is also a true believer in this crew), Drew, Bourgeois, Singly, etc all of them. What a crew. Enough of my soap box. Go Orioles, I have complete faith in you. Liz
