The Baltimore Orioles are not done adding depth into their pitching staff that has grown a good bit in the last 24 hours.
The Birds have claimed 25-year-old right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds.
Contreras is entering his fourth year in the major leagues and will be joining his fourth organization. He originally debuted as a Pittsburgh Pirate during the 2021 season, where he started one game, pitching three shutout innings with four strikeouts.
His first full season would be in 2022, where he would primarily be a starter for the Pirates and carry a 3.79 ERA in 21 games, 18 starts.
His 2023 year would be a struggle, as he posted a 6.59 ERA in 19 games and pitched just 68.1 innings. Pittsburgh decided to give him a final chance during the 2024 season, and after he struggled again, carrying a 4.41 ERA in 12 games, the Pirates traded him to the Los Angeles Angels.
Contreras would finish the season as an Angel and pitched 52 innings, carrying a 4.33 ERA and picking up two saves.
The Angels would release Contreras from the team after the 2024 season, and he would be both claimed and DFA’d by the Texas Rangers before the Cincinnati Reds claimed him in December.
Contreras does show true promise, though, when you take a small dive into his 2024 stats. A 7.38 K/9, .265 BABIP and a solid 75.1% of runners left on-base, which was his highest in his career. The Peralvillo, Dominican native also posted a .240 batting average against for the 2024 season.
In addition to this pick-up, the Orioles have designated infielder Liván Soto for assignment. Also, catcher René Pinto has been claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 40-man roster is now full.
