Boys and girls, I’m just going to say it. The ginormous dark cloud has finally lifted, and the Orioles are BACK.
I don’t say this lightly. I have been so frustrated and confused of late, as I’m sure most of you have been. However, taking three of four from the Toronto Blue Jays has me happy dancing after losing the series to the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres back-to-back. Of note, the game lost to Toronto started with a rain delay, which never bids well for the Birds, and was the second game of a doubleheader.
There are so many positives to talk about. The runners in scoring position curse was not permanent, Colton Cowser is on fire back to his April self and James McCann somehow escaped the IL after taking a 95 mph fastball to the face.
Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle made it past the trade deadline and have been stunting their veteran value. Tony simply can not stop tatering. The organization acquired some new pitching heat while Burnes and Rodriguez are still dealing and, oh yeah, JACKSON FREAKING HOLLIDAY.
His first big league home run was a 109 mph, 439-foot grand slam that smacked Eutaw Street, and his third at-bat almost landed an opposite field Weaver. Could you possibly script a better entrance for the kid?
That is the spark the Orioles have been needing. That is the heat I’ve been waiting for to rile these guys up, and we got it.
I feel confident again. The lineup is better. The depth is better. The starting rotation got better.
GM Mike Elias did what he needed to do and got the O’s through the deadline better than they were before. We’re seeing Cowser lead-offs with every batter reaching base and cleaning up runs. The defense has been having their struggles, but we’re coming out of the darkness. I see the light. Do you?
Not to mention, there’s still a hot player down in Triple-A set to make his MLB debut sometime this season in Coby Mayo. This is just the start of an incredible second half and a postseason run we’ve never seen before. Mark my words.
I know that there are still holes and things to work on. This team isn’t perfect by any means, but do they have the heart to take us all the way? I can safely say that they do, and we’re seeing them come alive again.
