The Delmarva Shorebirds won just one singular game out of five while on the road against the Down East Wood Ducks this past week, as their season struggles continue.

To say Delmarva struggled this series is a big understatement, putting together a team slash line of .192/.278/.281 with a .560 OPS. Despite the bad offensive performance, the pitching was actually quite good, putting together a 2.95 ERA and 1.17 WHIP.

Overall, three players shined this series for the Shorebirds, so let’s review the prospect performers from this week for the Shorebirds.

Offensive MVP: Thomas Sosa – OF

Thomas Sosa is someone that I have kept my eye on heavily after his 2023 season in Rookie Ball.

Sosa’s week was consistent, as he put together a .368/.520/.632 slash line with a 1.152 OPS in all five games. He collected seven hits, five doubles and five walks while also stealing a base in three attempts.

The 19-year-old is starting to show his true potential. He brings his average up to .250 and his OPS to .764. Remember the name Thomas Sosa as we continue covering the Shorebirds all season.

MVP on the Mound: Trey Gibson – RHP

When draft season comes around, you obviously take huge risks on who you take. The Orioles took a chance in 2023 when they signed undrafted free agent Trey Gibson out of Liberty University. After a rough first game for Gibson, he was extremely locked in for this series.

Gibson entered Wednesday’s game and pitched five no-hit innings to end the game. He walked just one batter and struck out eight. The game helped Gibson get back on track for the young season, bringing his ERA down to 4.63 and putting his strikeout total to 18.

Gibson only pitched in one game during the 2023 season, so he was a major wild card for the Shorebirds. But he wasted no time to show that he belongs and is ready to be a big help for this pitching staff in 2024, earning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts.

All-Around Performer: Angel Tejada – INF

A little bit of hitting and a little bit of speed. That’s what Angel Tejada brought for the Shorebirds this series.

Despite only playing in four of the five games, Tejada was overall the biggest performer for the Shorebirds this week. He put together a slash line of .375/.412/.438 with a .849 OPS, collecting six hits, a double, one walk and five stolen bases in five attempts.

Tejada has put together a solid start to the season with a .659 OPS and an OBP of .318. The 20-year-old is now up to 11 hits on the season and nine stolen bases in nine attempts.
