The Delmarva Shorebirds dropped their series against the Charleston RiverDogs 4-2. Losing the series dropped them to a 19-18 record this season, which is a major improvement from their 2022 start of the season.
Delmarva’s offense looked okay during this series, slashing .248/.451/.361 with a .813 OPS. They had 50 total hits, 12 doubles, one triple and three home runs. They also stole nine bases on 13 attempts.
The pitching staff put up a solid showing as well with a combined 5.22 ERA. They gave up 58 total hits, 29 earned runs, walked 21 batters and struck out 60. They also put up a 1.58 WHIP and a K/9 of 10.80.
Four players really showed out this series for the Shorebirds, and it shows that the future keeps looking bright.
ELIO PRADO – OF
Elio Prado put together a really good series and continues to have an impressive 2023 campaign. Venezuelan native compiled a .320/.452/.400 slashline with a .852 OPS in all six games.
He had eight total hits, two doubles and three walks. He also stole three bases in three attempts. The 2019 trade piece for Andrew Cashner is still only 21 years old and has been putting on a show for Delmarva this season.
EDGAR PORTES – RHP
The right-handed pitcher from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, has been really putting it together this season, and it showed this past week.
Portes started one game on the mound and went four innings of three-hit baseball. He walked two batters and struck out six. Portes continues to put together a season where he has a sub five ERA with a 1.75 WHIP in 21.2 innings pitched.
JUAN DE LOS SANTOS – RHP
The Delmarva ace finally had a big turnaround on the mound, as Juan De Los Santos had his best start of the season.
He earned a win in his start and pitched five no-hit innings, walking one and striking out six. De Los Santos continues a season where he has a 5.86 ERA in seven games, 27.2 innings pitched.
CARTER YOUNG – INF
Carter Young put together one amazing week to pick up on his season. The Vanderbilt alumni slashed an astonishing .389/.577/.500 with a 1.077 OPS in all six games.
He had seven total hits, four RBIs, five walks and went 1-1 on stolen bases. Young, on the season, carries a .186 average and an OPS of .583. While his stats don’t look impressive on the season, the potential is still high for the 22-year-old.
The Shorebirds start their new series on May 23 against Lynchburg at home at 11:05 a.m. EST. Delmarva has a very special promotion this week. On Friday, May 26, they are hosting Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond Night with an appearance from Captain America.
