Bowie escapes the unfriendly confines of Reading: Weekly Recap 5/10/22 – 5/15/22

Welcome to an overview of Bowie’s trip to Reading, Pennsylvania, to face the Fightin Phils, but don’t blink. Reading time – two minutes.

Among the few highlights in Friday’s 11-inning 11-10 loss, Gunnar Henderson drew a walk, his league-leading 30th of the season, to extend his on-base streak to a league-leading 29-consecutive games.

Bowie outhit Reading 16 to 15, the third time this season Bowie has lost despite outhitting their opponent. The 31 combined hits are the most in any game in the Eastern League this season.

In the only win of the week, 5-1 on Wednesday, the Baysox left 23 men on base and struck out 12 times. Andrew Daschbach led a four-run eighth inning with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season.

Bowie starter Ryan Watson allowed a solo home run to Aldrem Corredor in the first inning, but he sailed through five innings, striking out six and walking one, allowing one more base hit out of the infield by the end of his day.

Following Watson, Rico Garcia continued to shine out of the bullpen. Garcia (W, 1-0) picked apart the Reading offense for three innings, retiring all nine batters faced, throwing a four-pitch seventh inning.

In Tuesday’s 6-2 loss, the Baysox struck out 16 times and left 24 on base. Saturday’s game was rained out, leading to a Sunday doubleheader, seven-inning style.

The Fightin Phils swept it. Bowie came back to tie three different times in game one, losing 5-4, and blew a lead in the second game, losing 4-3.

The double defeat extended Bowie’s losing streak to four and dropped them to 13-18 on the season, a season-low five games under .500. Escaping Reading, the Baysox return home to begin a 12-game homestand against Hartford and Erie.
