No sunshine for O’s, as Rays sweep Baltimore in St. Pete: Series Recap 6/11/21 – 6/13/21

A three-game series against the top team in the American League was a litmus test to see where the Orioles stacked up against the best. Instead, the Tampa Bay Rays walked away with another sweep, leaving the O’s 0-6 on the season against the Rays and 20 games under .500 on the year.

Bruce Zimmermann pitched 5.2 innings, allowing only three earned runs, but as our young starters found out, spotting Tampa with a lead is a mountain you can’t climb back from.

To say the least, there were few, if any, positives from the weekend series that left the Orioles realing and still unable to best A.L. East opponents in head-to-head match-ups.

Cedric Mullins was one of the bright spots this weekend, picking up two more hits to add to his Major League lead (Mullins was given the day off Sunday). Mullins also picked up his 10th stolen base on the season, remaining a gem no one expected to shine. You can vote for Cedric and all your favorite O’s to appear in the 2021 MLB All-Star Game here!

Trey Mancini hit his team-leading 12th home run, adding to his RBI total of 47. Austin Wynns is starting to hit, proof being his first home run, a grand slam that briefly gave the Orioles hope for a comeback in game two.

On the defensive side of the ball, Austin Hays showed his importance to our team, picking up an outfield assist, his fourth on the season, which is fifth most in the American League this year.

Since May 16, the Rays have gone 23-5 and outscored their opponents by 86 runs. They use strong defense, good pitching, and timely hitting to seize control of games and not falter. This is the type of fundamental baseball the Orioles are trying to build during their lengthy rebuilding process. Time will tell if the Orioles can match this type of baseball.

The Orioles head to Cleveland for a four-game series, looking to forget the Florida Doldrums, as a new challenge awaits tomorrow.
