Delmarva sweeps Fredericksburg in 6, moves to 9-3 on season: Weekly Recap 5/11/21 – 5/16/21

The Delmarva Shorebirds are absolutely on fire, as they swept the Fredericksburg Nationals in six games to ultimately move to 9-3 on the season.

The Shorebirds outscored the Nationals 56 to 18. Yes, you read that correctly! The Nationals are 0-12 in their inaugural season. Delmarva ranks first in the league in OBP (.373) and home runs (18), second in runs (89), slugging, and OPS, and are fourth in team ERA.

Delmarva completed this sweep largely in part of offensive production. As a team, the Shorebirds were 22-for-82 (.268) with runners in scoring position. The Nats were 10-for-51 (.196) with runners in scoring position. That’s not going to win you ballgames.

As for individual performances, Orioles No. 5 overall prospect, shortstop Gunnar Henderson, continued to shine at the plate, going 10-for-23 (.435) with 13 RBI in five games this series. Henderson has also been named Low-A East Player of the Week.

Catcher Jordan Cannon also had an impressive series, going 6-for-19 with two homers and five RBI.

As for the pitching, Delmarva held Fredericksburg’s offense in check.

Right-hander Xavier Moore, 22, had a solid night on Friday, going four scoreless, hitless innings, striking out seven and picking up the win.

Orioles No. 7 overall prospect, right-hander Michael Baumann, pitched two innings of scoreless, hitless ball in his first rehab assignment. Baumann will likely pitch one more time for Delmarva before being moved up to Triple-A Norfolk.
