The Baltimore Orioles made a bit of a surprising announcement this evening, as the team adjusted its 40-man roster. Several young prospects were added, while Renato Núñez was designated for assignment.
Heading into the 2021 season, Núñez was eligible for arbitration and faced questions about his future in the lineup. Trey Mancini’s return from injury and the rise of Ryan Mountcastle make it difficult for Núñez to start at DH consistently.
Several young prospects were added to Baltimore’s roster, which protects them from the Rule 5 Draft. Mike Baumann is one of Baltimore’s exciting pitching prospects that could make the jump to MLB very soon.
Yusniel Díaz is a name that Orioles fans like myself have kept an eye on for years since he came to the Orioles as the top return in the Manny Machado trade. The 24-year-old outfielder has high potential to be a power hitter but lacks consistency in the minors. Seeing his name in this team announcement points towards a make-or-break season for Díaz.
