The 2027 MLB offseason is underway, meaning free agency is now open to all teams.
Outside of the various option decisions, the Baltimore Orioles have broken the ice and made its first acquisition of the offseason, agreeing to a one-year deal with outfielder Rece Hinds for the 2027 season, per multiple industry sources.
After being drafted in 2019, Hinds emerged as a top prospect within the Cincinnati Reds organization, reaching as high as No. 8 in its farm system rankings in both 2020 and 2021.
Hinds spent four years in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut with the Reds on July 8, 2024. The now-26-year-old got his career off to a hot start, going 5-for-8 with two home runs and three RBIs, finishing the season with a 1.050 OPS across 24 games.
Hinds bounced between Triple-A and the majors during the 2025 season, batting .302 with a .922 OPS in Triple-A while struggling at the MLB level, where he hit .116 with a .415 OPS.
The Reds designated Hinds for assignment in May 2026 before trading him to the Miami Marlins just four days later. After spending roughly two months in Miami’s organization, the Florida native became a trade deadline acquisition for the Orioles on August 3, when Baltimore acquired him in exchange for cash considerations.
Hinds began his time with the Orioles organization at Triple-A Norfolk, where he posted a .268/.373/.437 slash line with an .810 OPS. Baltimore called him up on September 6 after outfielder Luis Robert Jr. went down with a hamstring injury.
Hinds appeared in 12 games with the Orioles, collecting five hits, including two doubles, while posting a .523 OPS.
Baltimore has dealt with numerous injuries over the past two seasons, reinforcing the importance of having reliable organizational depth. Hinds provides another outfield option who could be called upon if injuries arise once again next year.
It is a low-risk signing that gives the Orioles another option heading into the 2027 season.
