Just when it appeared the Baltimore Orioles were finally ready to fade away in the American League Wild Card picture, they found another reason to keep fighting.
For much of the 2026 season, the Orioles have been stuck in the middle; never bad enough to completely fall out of the race but rarely good enough to create any real separation.
Then came the trade deadline, when president of baseball operations and acting-GM Mike Elias dealt away several familiar faces and left many wondering if the organization had finally accepted that this was not going to be its year.
It would have been easy for the Orioles to pack it in. Instead, the just refuse to die.
The Orioles have dealt with injuries, inconsistency and a roster that looks significantly different from the one that opened the season. Players have come and gone, young contributors have been asked to take on bigger roles and unexpected names have become important pieces.
Yet every time the Orioles appear ready to disappear, they find a way back into the conversation.
The latest example came in Sacramento, where Baltimore opened their series with the Athletics with a 4-3 extra-inning victory before following it with a 5-3 win on Saturday. Colton Cowser homered, Leody Taveras delivered a two-run double and Shane Baz picked up his first victory since June.
More importantly, the teams around them have left the door open.
The Cleveland Guardians currently hold the final AL Wild Card position at 68-68, while Baltimore sits directly behind them at 67-69. The Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers are also lurking, but for now, the Orioles control something that has been difficult to find throughout this season: momentum.
There is still plenty of work to do. At 67-69, the O’s are under .500 and cannot afford many more prolonged losing streaks. Every series from this point forward carries more weight, and upcoming games against Cleveland could prove especially important in determining how this race ultimately plays out.
Nobody is calling them favorites. Nobody is pretending this roster is perfect. But after everything this team has endured, the Birds have given themselves a chance.
The 2026 Orioles have spent the entire season hanging around the edges of contention. They have been doubted, counted out and seemingly buried more than once.
But here they are. Still fighting. Still chasing. Still alive.
The Orioles refuse to die.
