The Baltimore Orioles are red hot and have clawed their way back into a Wild Card spot.
A big reason for that recent success has been the offensive production of the newly-announced American League Player of the Week, Pete Alonso.
Alonso’s impact throughout the week was impossible to miss. The Orioles went 4-2, with Alonso putting together a remarkable .545/.630/.864 slash line and a 1.493 OPS. He collected 12 hits, including a double and two home runs, while driving in five runs.
Alonso even played Sunday while dealing with calf cramps and still managed to contribute at Tropicana Field.
Since signing with the Orioles in December, Alonso has quickly become a fan favorite and one of the biggest offensive forces in the lineup. He currently leads the team in batting average (.266), slugging percentage (.490), OPS (.851), hits (123), doubles (23), home runs (27) and RBIs (80).
Alonso’s 27 home runs and 80 RBIs would have led the Orioles in 2025, and he still has 36 games remaining on the 2026 schedule to add to those numbers. The Polar Bear also picked a pretty good week to earn the honor, as the Orioles will hand out his first official bobblehead to fans on Saturday.
Alonso is the first Oriole to win the AL Player of the Week award since Gunnar Henderson in September 2024. He is also the first Orioles first baseman to win the award since Ryan Mountcastle did so in late May/early June 2021.
This marks the sixth time Alonso has been named Player of the Week during his career, but this week was particularly impressive. His .545 batting average was the highest batting average of any of his six Player of the Week-winning performances.
It has been quite the season for The Polar Bear, and this latest honor is another reminder of just how important Alonso has become to the Orioles. Congratulations to Pete Alonso on a well-deserved American League Player of the Week award.
