The Baltimore Orioles are running out of time.
With just over a month and 40 games remaining in the regular season, the Orioles find themselves in a position that looked much more promising just a few weeks ago.
Baltimore currently sits at 58-63, two games behind the Texas Rangers for the final American League Wild Card spot. The Birds are still very much alive, but the margin for error is getting smaller by the day.
There is a difference between being mathematically alive and actually looking like a team capable of making a postseason run. Right now, the Orioles are somewhere in between. They have enough talent to make a run, but they have also shown enough inconsistency to make Birdland wonder which version of this team is going to show up each night.
There have been stretches where Baltimore has looked capable of putting up runs against anyone, followed by stretches where simply scoring a couple of runs feels like an accomplishment. The Orioles recently scored 10 runs against Texas to snap an offensive slump, only to struggle again against Minnesota.
The pitching staff presents another major storyline.
The O’s starting rotation has been lights out since the beginning of June, posting a 3.87 ERA and 1.29 WHIP since June 15. The starters have been the strength of the team for almost the entirety of the season.
The bullpen is another area that could ultimately decide the season.
Baltimore has already made changes to the roster and will need its relievers to be dependable if this team is going to survive the final six weeks. When every game carries postseason implications, giving away leads late in games is simply not an option.
The schedule will not make things any easier.
The Orioles are already playing against teams directly involved in the Wild Card race, and that trend will continue. Baltimore just finished a series against Minnesota, another club fighting for the same postseason spot, after dealing with Texas before that.
On one hand, Baltimore controls more of its own destiny when they plays teams directly ahead of them. On the other, losing those games can effectively create double damage by both hurting the Orioles and helping the competition.
That is why the next 10 games may tell us more about this team than the previous 120 did.
If the Orioles can string together wins against teams ahead of them in the standings, suddenly the Wild Card race looks very different. If they continue trading wins and losses while the teams ahead of them pull away, the conversation will quickly shift from whether this club can make the postseason to whether the organization should start looking toward 2027.
The Orioles are not out of it. In fact, sitting only two games out of the final Wild Card spot with more than a month remaining means there is still plenty of baseball to be played. But they are also not in a position where they can afford to wait for things to turn around.
The Orioles need its best players to be its best players. The rotation needs to give the offense a chance. The bullpen needs to protect leads. The offense needs to stop disappearing for multiple games at a time. And Craig Albernaz and his staff need to find the right combinations to give this team its best chance every night.
Forty-plus games remain, and that is enough time to completely change the story of the 2026 season. The question is whether the Orioles are going to write a postseason story or another disappointing chapter.
