According to multiple industry sources, the Baltimore Orioles have traded three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for .
Selected with the first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft ahead of shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., Rutschman became the cornerstone of the Orioles’ rebuild and the player the organization hoped would lead it back to contention.
After quickly climbing through the minor leagues and earning multiple accolades, Rutschman made his major-league debut on May 21, 2022. From that point forward, he became the face of the franchise and a leader behind the plate.
A gifted catcher with elite defensive ability and a polished offensive approach, Rutschman was a fixture in the Orioles’ lineup until injuries began to take their toll in 2025, when he landed on the injured list for the first time.
Since then, the 28-year-old three-time All-Star has made four additional trips to the injured list, including his current stint with wrist inflammation.
Rutschman helped lead the Orioles to an AL East title and a 101-win season in 2023 before helping the club reach the postseason again as a Wild Card team in 2024. Despite those accomplishments, Baltimore was swept out of the playoffs in both appearances.
Rutschman ends his Orioles career slashing .254/.342/.414 with 69 home runs, 122 doubles, 277 RBIs, 285 walks, 289 runs scored and 540 hits across 572 games.
Fellow catcher Jake Rogers is also headed to Boston in this deal. Rogers appeared in just one game with the O’s after being acquired from the Detroit Tigers.
Headlining the return, the Orioles acquired the Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect and the No. 49 overall prospect in baseball, 21-year-old right-hander Anthony Eyanson. Drafted just last year, Eyanson has already established himself as one of the game’s top pitching prospects. Between High-A and Double-A this season, he has posted a 1.32 ERA across 68.1 innings while walking 26, striking out 94 and holding opponents to a .152 batting average.
The Orioles also acquired the Red Sox’s No. 4 prospect, right-hander Kyson Witherspoon. Selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft with the 15th overall pick, Witherspoon was considered one of the biggest steals of the draft after entering the year as one of the top collegiate pitching prospects. In 17 starts at High-A, he owns a 4.78 ERA across 75.1 innings, allowing 71 hits, walking 34 and striking out 78.
Another highly regarded prospect heading to Baltimore is the Red Sox’s No. 5 prospect, Enddy Azocar. Originally signed as an international free agent in 2024, Azocar has continued to impress while climbing through the system. Between Low-A and High-A this season, he is slashing .286/.341/.540 with an .881 OPS. He has already set career-highs with 105 hits and 18 home runs.
The final piece of the deal is major-league catcher Carlos Narváez. The 27-year-old has been in the majors since 2024 and is best known for his breakout 2025 campaign, when he appeared in 118 games and posted a .725 OPS with 15 home runs. He has struggled offensively this season, however, batting .187 across 62 games.
For many in Birdland, the trade will mark the end of an era. Rutschman spent the better part of seven seasons in the organization becoming the symbol of the Orioles’ resurgence, only for the partnership to end before either side reached its ultimate goal.
Now, with Samuel Basallo prepared to take over as the club’s everyday catcher after signing an eight-year extension last year, the Orioles will turn the page.
