It had been 2,407 days since the Frederick Keys last took the field as a Baltimore Orioles minor-league affiliate.

On Friday, that drought ended. For the first time in six years, Frederick opened a season aligned with Baltimore’s system and wasted little time making a statement, defeating the Hub City Spartanburgers, 6–0.

The Keys’ lineup immediately reflected the organization’s top-end talent. Three of the Orioles’ top prospects — Nate George, Ike Irish and Wehiwa Aloy — occupied the first three spots in the order to begin the 2026 campaign. They were followed by No. 29 prospect Vance Honeycutt, while No. 12 prospect Joseph Dzierwa took the ball as the starter for the 2026 opener.

After three scoreless innings, Frederick broke through in the fourth. George worked a leadoff walk, and Irish followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Aloy delivered the breakthrough, driving a two-run triple to right field, marking the first RBI by a Keys player as an Orioles affiliate since Will Robertson’s sacrifice fly on September 2, 2019.

Dzierwa handled the rest. The left-hander was dominant in his season debut, striking out nine across six shutout innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. His outing set the tone for a pitching staff that would ultimately combine for a one-hitter.

Frederick added to its lead in the seventh with aggressive base running and timely hitting. RJ Austin reached on a walk, then promptly stole both second and third before scoring on an Elis Cuevas double. After Cuevas swiped a bag of his own, Braylin Tavera brought him home with a single to extend the lead to 4–0.

Right-hander Ben Vespi took over in relief, tossing two hitless innings while striking out two. The Keys tacked on two more runs in the ninth, as George singled and stole second before scoring on Irish’s second double of the night. Austin later drove in the final run on a force out.

Right-hander Joe Glassey closed it out with a clean ninth inning, sealing the 6–0 victory and completing the one-hit shutout.

It was a fitting return for a franchise that has navigated significant change in recent years, from its time in the MLB Draft League to the loss of former manager and Orioles infielder Ryan Minor in 2023.

Now back in the Orioles’ player development pipeline, Frederick opened its new chapter with a performance that underscored both its talent and its resilience.
