Finally, one of the big-name starting pitchers this free agency has signed.
From there, it is expected to be a domino effect. Left-hander Ranger Suárez set the market with a five-year, $130 million deal from the Boston Red Sox.
This means a couple of things for the Baltimore Orioles and president of baseball operations and acting-GM Mike Elias.
Firstly, another top of the rotation starter has entered the AL East in opposition of the Orioles. Secondly, Elias is running out of time.
That leaves left-hander Framber Valdez atop of the list of pitchers to sign, followed by right-hander Zac Gallen.
Elias has to land one of these arms. No excuses.
The re-signing of veteran righty Zach Eflin definitely helps bolster the rotation, but it’s certainly not enough.
Following the signing of Pete Alonso, we heard O’s owner David Rubenstein boast about the money available for other players. Since then, we have not seen any amount of substantial money being rumored or offered to any of these players.
The Orioles were reportedly engaged with Suárez, and it is definitely fair to say the deal he received from the Red Sox is a lot more player-friendly than team-friendly.
However, Rubenstein and the O’s have the capital to get a deal like that done for a position that is still very much needed.
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta is another option on the table as a trade acquisition, and with the kind of deal Suárez received, getting Peralta in a trade over a free agent signing becomes more likely.
Regardless, a move has to be made before the start of spring training.
