One of the great things about having two sports franchises represent your home city is the bevy of charitable events the teams can attend and collaborate together.
In Baltimore, it just so happens that the city’s pair of sports franchises are represented by logos of birds, the Orioles and the Ravens.
With stadiums adjacent to each other and sharing a parking lot, the majestic beauty of Baltimore is captured by these teams whenever they take the field, but the heartbeat of the city echoes through those stadiums, making Charm City truly come to life.
One event recently saw that happen, as the Orioles held a Thanks & Giving event in support of the Ed Reed Foundation.
The Thanks & Giving event was an internal food drive to collect non-perishable food items to donate to the foundation for its 20th annual Thanksgiving Blessings initiative. The event, held this past Friday, saw Orioles volunteers pack Thanksgiving meals for more than 5,000 families.
The meals, which could feed up to 15 people, included a 12-pound turkey, a roasted chicken and various side dishes. These meals would be distributed through Booker T. Washington Middle School and The SEED School of Maryland.
The Ed Reed Foundation’s annual Thanksgiving Blessings program has provided meals to families in Baltimore and New Orleans for 23 years through community programs founded in mentorship, health and wellness, as well as exposure to new environments. A donation of $50 can help provide a full meal for a family of nearly 15.
The most recent event in Baltimore saw over 10,000 families receive meals at the The SEED School of Maryland alone, a 24-hour learning environment for kids ages 6-12 that helps prepare youth for college and beyond.
“It is about so much more than the food. It is about the experience. It is about families being able to get together for the holiday.”
Founder, Hall of Famer and Ravens legend, Ed Reed
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, we are reminded how important family is to all of us and our Birdland community. For those in need, they now will have the chance to share in the experience because of the thoughtfulness of Birdland, The Flock, the Orioles, Ed Reed and all of the volunteers who helped to give a little joy to those in need.
