The MLB offseason is underway, and we have our first waiver move, as the Baltimore Orioles have claimed right-hander George Soriano off waivers from the Miami Marlins.

Originally signed by the Marlins in 2015, Soriano didn’t make his MLB debut until April 16, 2023, when he pitched three scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Soriano pitched 26 games in 2023, posting an ERA of 3.81 in 52 total innings. The Dominican native also collected his first save that season.

In 2024, Soriano took a little bit of a downfall, as he had an ERA of 6.75 in 22 games and 29.1 innings of work, striking out just 29 batters.

Soriano would pitch his third season with the Marlins in 2025, and while he had another down year, he developed a new pitch in his arsenal, a sinker. The 26-year-old compiled a 8.35 ERA in 24 games over 36.2 innings.

To make room for Soriano on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have designated outfielder Daniel Johnson for assignment. Johnson posted a .519 OPS with the Orioles last season in just 17 games. The 40-man roster is now at a max.

We saw last year with Rico Garcia and Matt Bowman that picking up depth pieces on the waiver wire can work out, especially with how injuries have been affecting the pitching staff for two straight seasons.
