We are less than a week away from the trade deadline, and the Baltimore Orioles have made their first move of the deadline season.
According to multiple industry sources, the Orioles have traded left-handed reliever Gregory Soto to the New York Mets in exchange for right-handed pitchers Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster.
Soto, who was acquired at the 2024 trade deadline by the Orioles, has been the primary late-game lefty reliever for the Birds. In 45 games this season, he posted a 3.96 ERA in 36.1 innings of work.
Soto has compiled 18 holds and one save, has given up 16 earned runs, walked 18 batters and struck out 44 on the year. Opposing batters are hitting just .216 against Soto this season.
In return, the Orioles received the Mets’ 19th-ranked prospect in Wellington Aracena, a 20-year-old who has been lights out this season at the High-A level.
The young righty carries a 2.38 ERA in 64.1 innings of work this season for the St. Lucie Mets. Batters are hitting just .166 against him, and he has a ratio of 35 walks to 84 strikeouts.
The second piece of the trade is unranked prospect Cameron Foster. Originally drafted by the Mets in the 14th round in the 2022 MLB Draft, Foster has been a solid reliever in the minor leagues.
In 19 games as a Rumble Pony in Double-A this season, Foster posted a 1.01 ERA with two saves in 26.2 innings of work. The 26-year-old walked just five batters during that span.
Things got a little rocky with a promotion, as he had an ERA of 17.18 in two Triple-A games, when batters hit .412 in that span.
This trade is extremely balanced. The Mets, who are contending and are currently sitting at the top of the NL East, needed bullpen help, especially in the lefty department.
The Orioles needed extra arms in the farm system moving forward, as they look to ship off any rental contracts they can this year.
