After three straight winning seasons, back-to-back postseason appearances and the most wins in baseball since 2023, expectations were sky high for the Baltimore Orioles coming in 2025.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, who had helped rebuild a club through three 108+ loss seasons, had to shoulder a lot of pressure to take the next step.
Hyde already was going to feel his seat warm up if the Birds were swept in October again while continuing their 10-game postseason losing streak.
Hyde’s seat got hot real fast as the Orioles started sluggish and currently find themselves 15-28, 13 games under .500 for the first time since 2021.
Because of the poor fundamental play and situational in-game meltdowns of the season, the Orioles organization has decided to relieve Hyde of his duties as manager after parts of seven seasons with the club.
“As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,” said Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias. “Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.”
Hyde leaves the Orioles as the cellar dwellers in the AL East and 10.5 games behind the first place Yankees. The Birds rank second to last or last in nearly every offensive and pitching statistical category.
The team has shown a lack of discipline, hustle and motivation while regressing at the same time. Even without the injuries, the club was hardly the pesky kids that wouldn’t go away and were turning the baseball world’s glances its way.
Hyde finishes his time with the Orioles with a record of 421-492. He helped guide the team back to the postseason for the first time since 2016, make it to the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time since 1982-’83 and win the AL East title for the first time since 2012.
Along with relieving Hyde of his managerial duties, the Orioles also fired Tim Cossins, their major eague field coordinator and catching instructor.
Taking over managerial duties in the interim for the departed Hyde is third base coach Tony Mansolino, who has been with the organization since 2021.
The team announced that Buck Britton will be the interim third base/infield coach, replacing Mansolino. Mitch Plassmeyer will be the interim bullpen/assistant pitching coach, replacing Cossins.
“Brandon Hyde is someone I have come to know and deeply admire, not only for his extensive knowledge of baseball, but also for his exceptional leadership as a manager,” said Orioles Control Owner David Rubenstein. “I am sincerely grateful for his significant accomplishments over the past six years, which have greatly benefited both the Orioles and the city of Baltimore.”
With a new owner who is willing to spend money and wants to see a World Series trophy before he passes, Rubenstein will be even more influential in matters going forward.
“As is sometimes the case in baseball, change becomes necessary, and we believe this is one of those moments. The Orioles organization is truly appreciative of everything Brandon has contributed during his tenure, and we wish him nothing but success in whatever path he chooses next in the world of baseball,” Rubenstein explained.
The Orioles are now at a crossroads and a new journey under new guidance. Will they be able to salvage their season and turn things around, or will they continue their spiral?
We want to thank Brandon Hyde for helping make Baltimore Baseball relevant again and bringing Charm City Orioles Magic after years of struggle. We wish you well in your future endeavors while also looking forward to seeing the next step in the Birds’ growth.
