According to multiple industry sources, the Baltimore Orioles have claimed right-hander Scott Blewett off waivers from the Minnesota Twins.
Blewett, 29, was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Charles W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, New York.
After spending parts of 11 seasons in the minor leagues, the Syracuse native compiled a career 55-62 record with an ERA of 5.07 and WHIP of 1.47. His strikeouts per nine on the farm stand at 7.8.
Blewett made his major league debut with the Royals during the shortened 2020 season, pitching in two games. Since then, he’s pitched in 19 big league games between Kansas City and Minnesota, posting a respectable 2.18 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 33 innings of work.
The right-hander has thrown in two games for the Twins this season, giving up one earned run and striking out five in 4.2 innings.
To make room on the 40-man roster, left-hander Luis González has been designated for assignment. This season at Triple-A Norfolk, the 33-year-old has pitched to a 5.79 ERA in four appearances.
Blewett is also out of minor league options. Therefore, a corresponding 26-man roster will need to be made, most likely resulting in right-hander Colin Selby being optioned back down to Norfolk.
We’d like to welcome Scott Blewett to Birdland and wish him nothing but success.
UPDATE: The Orioles made the move official, adding Blewett to the 26-man roster and optioning Selby to Triple-A Norfolk. Blewett will wear No. 67.
