Spring training is halfway come and gone, and it’s only right to discuss which Baltimore Orioles prospects have shown out the most during Grapefruit League play.
We have selected five prospects who have proved themselves during spring thus far. It’s a long shot that any of them make the 26-man roster out of camp, but their hot starts to the season are encouraging nonetheless.
With that said, let’s jump right into it.
SAMUEL BASALLO – C/1B
We have to start with the Orioles’ top overall prospect.
Samuel Basallo has been the primary standout prospect to see this spring, as he owns a .294/.278/.765 slash line in 10 games with a 1.043 OPS. He’s collected five hits, one triple, two mammoth home runs and has driven in eight run.
Basallo’s 2024 season was a downgrade from his 2023 campaign, but it would still be considered a great year for most. The 20-year-old backstop posted a .790 OPS in 127 minor league games last season, collecting 25 doubles and 19 home runs on 133 hits. Basallo’s debut with the Orioles is on the horizon, and it could be as soon as this year.
DYLAN BEAVERS – OF
Dylan Beavers is another prospect who has gotten a fair amount of playing time with the club this spring.
In seven games, Beavers is slashing .273/.333/.636 with a .969 OPS and has three hits, including a home run and two RBIs. The Cal Berkeley product might only have 11 at-bats during this time, but he’s made the most of the opportunity.
Like Basallo, Beavers had a down year in 2024, but his 31 stolen bases last season and 40 extra-base hits, including 15 home runs, show just what this kid can provide for the organization moving forward. We don’t call him “the Orioles’ Kyle Tucker” for nothing.
KADE STROWD – RHP
The only pitcher on this list is a guy who is already on the 40-man, as the Orioles protected Kade Strowd from the Rule 5 Draft this offseason.
Strowd has pitched in four games and has not given up an earned run in 3.1 innings of work. The 27-year-old has held batters to a .154 average and has struck out three, but the concern is that he has walked five batters.
Strowd is seen as someone who gets a late call-up for a reliever to rest or could even be next in line for when roster moves are made during the season. The Fort Worth native has had a 5+ ERA in his last 81 minor league games, but he is a prospect who could be high-risk, high-reward this season.
LUIS VÁZQUEZ – INF
Luis Vázquez might not be as recognized as the other names on this list, but the former Chicago Cub has been showing his worth.
In 11 games, Vázquez has a .788 OPS, but he’s batting for a .318 average in 22 at-bats. He has 10 hits, three doubles and has knocked in six.
The Puerto Rican product is most likely going to see Triple-A Norfolk for a majority of the year, but it’s nice to see the potential he shows, especially defensively. With Gunnar Henderson’s status for Opening Day somewhat unknown, Vázquez has a good a chance as any to fill that 26th spot if needed.
MAVERICK HANDLEY – C
The O’s catching department between all levels of the organization is pretty loaded when you take a deep look at it.
Maverick Handley has been a workhorse in past springs, including 22 games back in 2023, and that hasn’t changed in 2025. In nine games, Handley is slashing .364/.462/.545 with a 1.007 OPS in just 11 at-bats and has collected four hits, two doubles and two RBIs.
Handley is entering his sixth year with the organization since being drafted back in 2019. While we haven’t seen big numbers by Handley because of small injuries throughout his career, he has shown consistency with finding ways of getting on base. He only played in 84 games last season and was still able to earn 44 walks, 26 RBIs and 12 doubles.
