We are less than a month away from pitchers and catchers reporting for spring training, and as exciting as that is, we have hit the final significant day of the 2024-2025 offseason.
The international signing period is officially open to all 30 teams, and the Orioles have done their part to build the future of this franchise. The Birds have currently agreed to deals with 22 players as of January 15.
The Orioles 2025 signing class is headlined by 16-year-old shortstop José Luis Peña from the Dominican Republic. Peña is one of the younger members of this class, as he doesn’t turn 17 until August 16. He is currently ranked 47th on MLB Pipeline’s top 50 international prospects list.
The class contains a mix of positions and prospects from all over Central America: Five catchers, five infielders, four outfielders, five right-handed pitchers and three left-handed pitchers.
The prospects consist of four players from Cuba, six from Venezuela, one from St Thomas and 11 from the Dominican Republic. This includes current Orioles bench coach Robinson Chirinos’ nephew, Ricardo Chirinos.
The international signing period is still underway, but just like most signing days, the agreements are usually decided by now, and it’s just waiting to put pen to paper. You won’t see these players for a few years barring any huge jumps, but they are prospects to keep an eye on if you are interested in learning about future assets for the organization.
