We have reached the top three prospects on the Orioles’ top 30 list.
The O’s third ranked prospect is a member of the most recent draft class and is a big part of the future of the Birds’ offense. Let’s dive into the O’s No. 3 overall prospect on this edition of Prospect Profiles.
Scouting Grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 65 | Arm: 60 | Field: 70 | Overall: 50
Honeycutt attended the University of North Carolina as a freshman in 2022, and he immediately made an impact as a starter for the Tar Heels. In 64 games, the Salisbury, NC, native slashed .296/.409/.672 with a 1.081 OPS.
He collected 73 total hits, 10 doubles, four triples and an astonishing 25 home runs while also knocking in 57 RBIs. He would also show off his plus speed by stealing 29 bases.
Honeycutt would take a step back offensively the following season, as his average would drop down to .257, and his OPS would take a dip to .910 in 14 fewer games. He hit just 20 extra-base knocks, including 12 home runs, and stole just 12 bases.
As a junior, Honeycutt had his best collegiate season at UNC. He posted a .318 average, carried a 1.124 OPS and topped that with a .714 slugging percentage. He collected 88 total hits, 28 home runs, 70 RBIs and stole 28 bases in 62 games.
Honeycutt would be the 22nd-ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline heading into the 2024 draft. Ironically enough, the Orioles would select him with the 22nd overall pick in the first round.
Honeycutt would bypass the FCL and debut on August 22 with the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds. He would spend 13 games between Delmarva and High-A Aberdeen, where he would struggle to get going offensively, as he hit just .176 and posted nine hits in 51 at-bats.
At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, the 21-year-old creates well-above-average raw power with bat speed, strength, leverage and loft. He has similar speed and fine instincts, making him a base stealing threat and a potential Gold Glover in center field, where his plus arm is stronger than most at the position.
