Once again, Baltimore Orioles GM Mike Elias and company have made a move to bolster up the starting rotation ahead of the 2025 season.

This time, the announced signing is of veteran right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton to a one-year, $15 million deal.

Morton, 41, is no stranger to major league success and no stranger to success on a Mike-Elias-ran organization. Morton has pitched in three World Series, winning two of them during his 17-year career.

Most recently, Morton spent the last four years in Atlanta, where he did win the World Series in 2021 with the Braves. During those four years, Morton netted a combined 3.88 ERA across 124 games started. For a guy entering his age 41 season, an average of 31 games started over his last four seasons is pretty encouraging.

Morton will be another guy with a highlighted breaking ball that has stifled hitters for a long time now. He never did, and especially now, won’t hurt anyone with velocity. However, his high groundball rate with a stellar defense behind him can make for a solid number four or five option.

Morton will join a rotation alongside Grayson Rodriguez, Zach Eflin, Dean Kremer and rookie 35-year-old Tomoyuki Sugano.

With this signing, it’s unclear if the Orioles will be in the running for any of the remaining free agent options, including Jack Flaherty. It does, however, exemplify the dire need for a high-level trade to bring in a true ace to this rotation.

In order to make room on the 40-man roster, catcher René Pinto has been designated for assignment.
