The hot stove is simmering right now, and the Baltimore Orioles are here to shop.
After signing outfielder Tyler O’Neill to a three-year, $49.5 million deal, the Birds followed that up by securing their backup catcher, signing veteran Gary Sánchez.
Sánchez, who recently turned 32, is a former Silver Slugger and two-time All-Star. The former Yankee has hit 10 or more home runs in 10 different seasons, with a career-high of 34 in 2019.
The power-hitting catcher is slashing .224/.309/.463/.772 with 184 home runs and 485 RBIs for his career.
The deal is for one year and $8.5 million to be the backup to Adley Rutschman. With Samuel Basallo in the minors and not far from being MLB ready, Sánchez’s veteran leadership and playoff experience will be valuable to the young Orioles.
As the Winter Meetings are ready to start, the Orioles will be a team to continue to keep an eye on as they are prepared to make a splash.
