Before we can truly kick off this 2024-2025 MLB offseason, we first need to crown the award winners from what was an exciting 2024 regular season.
First, and most importantly, is Colton Cowser being runner-up for the BBWAA Jackie Robinson American League Rookie of the Year honor. Right-hander Luis Gil of the New York Yankees took home the honor.
Cowser, who was named the 2024 Players Choice Awards AL Outstanding Rookie, joins teammate and fellow Lego enthusiast Gunnar Henderson as back-to-back Rookie of the Year candidates for the Orioles.
Cowser’s rookie season was certainly one of ups and downs. When we say ups, we mean really high ups, and when we say downs, we mean really low downs.
Ultimately, no Rookie of the Year candidate plays 162 games and dominates in their first taste of the majors. For Cowser, there was a considerable amount of more ups than downs.
Over the 2024 season, Cowser slashed .242/.321/.447 with a .768 OPS and 123 OPS+.
This Rookie of the Year bid really started with an electric spring training, but it took off in Boston against the Red Sox at the beginning of April.
This series was supposed to be all about Jackson Holliday and the debut of the year. However, Cowser had other plans. In that three-game series at Fenway, Cowser smashed two home runs, notched 10 RBIs and logged six hits in 13 at-bats.
Over the course of the season following this Boston series, Cowser added another 22 home runs to bring his total to 24. He also owned a very impressive 17-game hitting streak that also stretched into a 19-game on-base streak.
Defensively, Cowser may have been as good as at the plate. Playing a lot of his time in Camden Yards’ left field, The Milkman was essentially a second center fielder. Across all three outfield positions, Cowser netted 11 defensive runs saved in 2024 with over 1,100 innings slated defensively.
For the Orioles, a total of five players were up for various awards. Corbin Burnes was selected to the First Team All-MLB roster, Anthony Santander won his first Silver Slugger Award and Colton Cowser ultimately was runner-up as the American League Rookie of the Year.
Jordan Westburg and the aforementioned Henderson came up just short of Silver Slugger Awards at their respective positions, both coming in as the runner-up.
All of us at The Baltimore Battery would like to congratulate the 2024 Oriole award winners and runner-ups on fantastic seasons and receiving the recognition they have earned.
