For the first time since the 2011 and 2012 seasons, a Baltimore player has been named Most Valuable Oriole (MVO) in back-to-back seasons.

Gunnar Henderson was voted by local sports writers and media as the 2024 Most Valuable Oriole, following up last year’s win with an even more impressive season.

Henderson became the first Oriole since Adam Jones won the honor back-to-back in 2011-12. He is also the first shortstop since Cal Ripken Jr. back in 1990-91 to win the distinction in back-to-back seasons.

Henderson leads the Orioles with a WAR of 8.8, which ranks third in all of baseball. The next closest Oriole is Corbin Burnes with a 3.2 WAR. Henderson’s WAR is also the third highest in a season behind Ripken Jr.’s 1991 (11.5) and 1984 (9.8) seasons.

The reigning AL Rookie of the Year has put on a stellar season that has helped keep the Orioles in the running for the AL East title and a second straight postseason berth.

Henderson is slashing .283/.366/.538/.904, hitting 37 home runs (most by an Orioles shortstop in history) and 87 RBIs. Of Henderson’s 171 hits, 73 have gone for extra bases, which includes 29 doubles, seven triples and the 37 long balls.

The young All-Star has joined the 20-20 club, becoming only the fourth Orioles player, (Cedric Mullins (2021), Jonathan Villar (2019) and Manny Machado (2015) since 2000 to accomplish the feat and the ninth such player in O’s history.

In a season that has seen Anthony Santander smash 43 home runs and drive in 99 runs, the 23-year old Henderson has been a mainstay in the lineup, a spark plug as the lead-off hitter and has provided eye-popping defensive plays in another magical season.

“Yeah just the history of this team and just the caliber of players that have come through this team. It’s pretty special to win it back-to-back years.”
