Major League Baseball has announced its Player of the Week recipients, and for the American League, Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson earns the honor.
The 23-year-old star had a torrid week at the plate and made franchise history along the way. A key member to the success of the Orioles this season, Henderson once again is stepping up when it matters most.
Over the past week, Henderson has been on a tear, going 10-for-24 across two series played. Those 10 hits included three home runs, which set the Orioles franchise record for homers in a season (35+), surpassing the previous record of 34 held by Cal Ripken Jr. and Miguel Tejada.
Henderson added five RBIs, six runs scored and two stolen bases for the week as well. During that stretch, the 2023 AL Rookie of the Year hit .417 with a 1.298 OPS.
The All-Star shortstop is now slashing .282/.367/.540/.907 with 36 home runs, 85 RBIs, 108 runs and 18 stolen bases for the year.
The Alabama native leads the Orioles in OPS (.907), average (.282), total hits (159), triples (six), runs scored (108), walks (70) and games played (142).
We congratulate Henderson on this accomplishment, as we can’t wait to see what he can do for the rest of the stretch run into October.
