I’ll admit it. I was totally wrong about this guy.

Albert Suárez, our beautiful Venezuelan savior, continues to surprise us all. The news breaking about Grayson Rodriguez’s lat strain felt like shell shock for all of Baltimore. There’s no way this is happening… again.

Lucky for Birdland, it seems Big Al took his last bullpen assignment personally following the trade deadline, and he is here for blood. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Suárez save the day. He is the notable go-to pitcher when another one bites the evil injury dust. Not just once, but every time.

In April, when Tyler Wells entered the IL, in May for Dean Kremer and again in early August, coming in with just minutes notice that Rodriguez was not good to go. Yet still we referred to him as a nice depth guy, a bullpen arm at best, who wasn’t ready for what the Orioles had thrown him. Has that changed?

According to The Baltimore Sun’s Jacob Calvin Meyer, Suárez is leading the pack with the most scoreless starts by big league pitchers in 2024, with eight. Tied for second is Bryce Miller, Reynaldo López and Hunter Greene with seven.

In Suárez’s last three starts, he’s pitched 17.2 innings, with 17 strikeouts, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP, meaning he hasn’t allowed a run in almost 18 straight innings.

Not to mention the elephants in the room, but Suárez is about to turn 35 years old, didn’t pitch in the majors for almost a decade and is turning the heat up like this? Are you joking? How can you NOT be impressed?

Aside from Burnes, I think it’s arguable that Suárez has actually been the O’s most dependable starter this season. He has spent no time on the IL, and despite his rough June/July stretch, which honestly impacted the entirety of the team, he steps up in the moments the team needs him to.

Do I think a Cy Young Award is coming Suárez’s way? Unfortunately, that type of recognition, no. But can we, as fans, surely kiss the ground he walks on? Yes.

I think the entire community, as am I, are warming up to him quicker than ever with his latest performance, thanking the high heavens for him being a Baltimore Oriole. Signing Big Al last September had everyone confused. What can this guy from the KBO even do for us? This is what he can do.

Turns out, Suárez may have been the biggest steal of them all. We will be seeing Big Al pitch a postseason game, and I am unbelievably excited, with the utmost confidence in him.
