With the Orioles heading into Miami for a three-game series against the Marlins, it’s still unclear who will be back-ending the rotation for games two and three in LoanDepot Park.

With the news that dropped early Tuesday afternoon, that rotation may have added a member, as the Orioles have added right-hander Chayce McDermott to the taxi squad, and he will join the team in Miami. If he does pitch, it will be his major league debut.

McDermott was acquired during the 2022 trade deadline as a part of the deal that sent Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros. The Birds were given McDermott as the headliner of that deal.

Since that deal took place, McDermott has cemented himself as the best starting pitcher in the O’s minor league system, alongside left-hander Cade Povich, who made his big league debut in June.

In this season alone, McDermott has shown some really good stuff on the mound and great strikeout potential. At the time of this promotion, the 25-year-old is sitting pretty with 129 strikeouts in just 91 innings pitched, with an ERA of 3.96 and WHIP of 1.43.

This addition to the taxi squad could be nothing more than a precaution to aid a rotation that needs the arms. It could also be a makeshift showcase for other teams who are scouting McDermott for a potential trade of their own as this year’s deadline looms.

McDermott’s one real downfall so far this season has been his walks and the long ball. In those 91 innings, the Ball State product has allowed 10 home runs, along with 54 walks.

If McDermott does pitch, making his debut in this series against a struggling Marlins offense does make sense. Also, with the woes that have struck the O’s bullpen, it is very likely we see a debut for McDermott come in a relief appearance.

Until we know for sure the plans manager Brandon Hyde and his coaching staff have for the O’s No. 7 overall prospect, we would like to welcome Chayce McDermott to the big leagues!

UPDATE: According to O’s beat reporter Matt Weyrich, McDermott has a locker in the visiting clubhouse at LoanDepot Park, and it appears he will wear No. 60 if activated.
