Another month down in baseball, which means it’s time to talk about the prospects that showed out in the month of May.

We have five prospects that absolutely tore it up in their respective leagues. With that being said, let’s get into those five prospects.

Delmarva Shorebirds: Aron Estrada – INF

The 19-year-old Aron Estrada had a phenomenal month of May that resulted in completely turning his season around.

In 24 games, Estrada slashed .330/.402/.462 with a .864 OPS. He collected 30 hits, three doubles, three home runs and 14 RBIs and also had eight stolen bases in 10 attempts.

Estrada has shown improvement in his third year in the minor leagues. In 42 total games, Estrada has a .671 OPS with 41 hits and 11 stolen bases, but his month of May was definitely promising for his career moving forward.

Aberdeen IronBirds: Moisés Chace – RHP

Moisés Chace is a Baltimore Battery favorite, especially for writer Justin Sutphin, who tries not to miss a single start for this youngster.

Chace had a great May, putting together a 1.59 ERA in 17 innings pitched and five starts. He only gave up three earned runs and struck out 24 batters on the month.

In nine games, Chace has a 1.41 ERA in 32 innings pitched. He has only given up five total earned runs this season and has struck out 46 batters. The biggest factor is that he’s held batters to a .189 average.

Unfortunately, Chace had an incident in a game recently that put him in the hospital for a brief amount of time. He is now on the mend, and all of us hope for a speedy and safe recovery for the 20-year-old.

Bowie Baysox: Samuel Basallo – C/1B

I feel like every time we talk about Bowie, we have to talk about Samuel Basallo. But when you look at his stats for the month of May, it makes complete sense why you have to keep bringing him up.

Basallo slashed .297/.373/.418 with a .821 OPS in 24 games in May, collecting 27 hits, two doubles and three home runs, along with 10 walks and 13 RBIs.

The O’s No. 2 prospect has been improving every week and looks like a pro at the age of 19. With a season OPS of .757 and 49 hits with 12 extra-base hits, Basallo is looking for a possible call-up to Norfolk in the near future, despite his young age.

Norfolk Tides: Connor Norby – INF

Connor Norby put together a month of May that proves that his call-up to the big leagues is on the horizon.

Norby had a .402 on-base percentage and a .908 OPS to combine with 24 hits and nine doubles in May. He’s been great this season despite small injury setbacks throughout the year, as he has a .887 OPS in 199 at-bats this season, with 57 hits, 16 doubles and nine home runs.

The O’s No. 6 prospect also has upped his baserunning, stealing seven bases in nine attempts.

Overall Prospect: Edgar Portes – RHP

Edgar Portes as the best overall prospect for the month? Absolutely.

Portes had maybe the best month statistically by a pitcher who isn’t either a top 100 prospect or in their team’s top 30. The 21-year-old gave up just one singular earned run in the month of May and struck out 27 batters in 20.2 innings pitched while holding batters to a .113 batting average.

Ports has been a monster on the mound all season. An ERA of 2.04 in 39.2 innings pitched along with 47 strikeouts is downright incredible. He has only given up nine earned runs this season and has held batters to a .167 average.
