The first series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels did not end the way we wanted, as Bowie lost four of the six games in this series.
The Bowie offense had some cold bats, as the Baysox put up 36 total hits this series and only had 12 extra-base hits. The pitching, on the other hand, was solid, having a team ERA of 3.12 and striking out 68 batters while only walking 25.
There were three overall players that showed out this past series. Let’s take a look at who performed well this week.
Offensive MVP: Samuel Basallo – 1B
Seeing Basallo absolutely torch the baseball this series was something that we have been waiting for. He put together a slash line of .316/.381/.632 with a 1.013 OPS. He collected six hits, including his first ever multi-home-run game with the Baysox.
Basallo has really turned his season around. He brings his hit total up to 20 on the year, his OPS to .660 and his average up to .253. While he is still below his 2023 numbers, Basallo is really starting to get back into showing his full potential moving forward.
MVP on the Mound: Carlos Tavera – RHP
For the second week in a row, Tavera put together an absolute stellar performance on the mound. The 25-year-old appeared in two games and pitched 8.2 innings, only giving up four hits and one earned run. He also walked three batters, struck out 10 and picked up a win.
Tavera continues to bring down his ERA, as he’s now at a 3.46 ERA in 13 innings pitched on the season. He also picked up his 200th career strikeout, so big congrats to Tavera for breaking that milestone in just 49 professional games.
All-Around Performer: John Rhodes – OF
John Rhodes might have had a slow start to the season, but he really picked it up this series. Rhodes put together a slash line of .294/.400/.765 with a 1.165 OPS in five games this series. He collected five hits, two doubles and two home runs while also picking up five RBIs and three walks.
As I mentioned earlier, Rhodes has had a slow start to the season. But after this series, he now has a .222 average, .382 On-base and an OPS of .789 on the year. He also passed the 200-hit mark, as the University of Kentucky product is starting to get hot at the right time.
Moment of the Series: Basallo’s two-homer day
During Sunday’s series finale, Samuel Basallo hit not one but two home runs to lead Bowie to a 4-2 victory. Those two clutch bombs earned our moment of the series.
The Baysox are coming back to Prince George’s Stadium to face the Erie Seawolves. First game is on Tuesday, April 30, with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EST. This week is filled with promotions, including Glow in the Park on May 3 and an Anthony Santander Fantasmas De Chesapeake bobblehead giveaway on May 5.
