It’s our first Bowie Baysox recap of the 2024 season, and we are starting off with a bang, as Bowie took five of six against the Altoona Curve.

Behind a fantastic offense that slashed a clean .304/.389/.525 with a .913 OPS and an ERA of 2.78 from the pitching staff, the Baysox won their first six-game series of the year.

Let’s take a look at three key prospect performers who helped aid Bowie to a big series victory.

Offensive MVP: Dylan Beavers – OF

Beavers started the series with his first home run of the season on Tuesday and capped off the day with three total hits and two RBIs. He would continue his offensive dominance in game two, collecting a single, drawing a walk and scoring a run.

Beavers would then lead off for Bowie on Thursday and have his third double of the season while also drawing his second walk of the series. After getting Friday off, the former California Golden Bear would come back on Saturday with his second double, ending the series with two more hits, including his second home run and three RBIs.

Beavers’ entire series would combine for a .444/.500/.889 slash line and 1.389 OPS. He would have eight total hits, four extra-base hits, five RBIs, six runs, three walks and two stolen bases in two attempts.

This series moves Beavers’ season average to a .347, his OPS to .972 and gives him 17 total hits on the young campaign.

MVP on the Mound: Carlos Tavera – RHP

After a struggle in his first game of the season, Tavera was given the ball during Wednesday’s victory, entering the game in the sixth inning.

He would start the game striking out the side on just 11 pitches and would come back out for the seventh and would induce a flyout, a called strike three and a popout. Tavera would be at 20 pitches through two innings.

The big right-hander would take the mound again for the eighth and would induce two lineouts and grab his fifth strikeout of the game. He would finish the game with two more strikeouts, pitching four no-hit innings in total, striking out seven batters on 47 total pitches.

Tavera would bring his ERA down to 8.31 on the season and pick up his first win. His outing would also bring his average against down to .188 and bring his WHIP down to 0.92.

All-Around Performer: Frederick Bencosme – INF

While Beavers was the best offensive player this week, Bencosme was not only an offensive monster, but he also showed off the glove this series.

Bencosme started off the series hot, grabbing two hits in Tuesday’s win, including his first triple of the season, while also collecting three RBIs. He would continue to swing a hot bat heading into Wednesday, tallying another three hits, including his second home run of the season.

On Thursday, Bencosme would grab another two hits and another RBI but would also make an incredible sliding play at short to save a hit. He would pick it back up with two more hits on Saturday, hitting his second home run of the series and collecting two more RBIs.

He would end the series slashing .391/.391/.783 with a 1.174 OPS and would finish with a team-high nine hits, four for extra bases, and seven RBIs. This series would help lift Bencosme’s average to .365 and OPS to 1.026. Bencosme is currently at 19 total hits, three home runs and 12 RBIs on the season.

Moment of the Series: Jud Fabian’s Walks It Off

The Baysox won two games this week in walk-off fashion.

The first on Friday, when John Rhodes’ base hit led to a 5-4 victory, and the second on Saturday, when Jud Fabian, with the bases loaded, would hit a walk-off grand slam to have the Baysox, 6-2.

Bowie’s next series is on the road against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The first game will be on Tuesday with an 11:05 a.m. EST start time.
