Orioles GM Mike Elias saw something special in Gunnar Henderson when he was drafted No. 42 overall in the 2019 MLB Amateur Player Draft straight out of John T. Morgan Academy in Selma, Alabama.
This past season, Henderson showed why Elias thought so highly of him and why he was in the big leagues at the age of 21. Due to his 2023 success, Henderson is the favorite to win the BBWAA AL Rookie of the Year.
Having won the Sporting News Rookie of the Year and being announced as a finalist for a Silver Slugger Award, this offseason looks to be a busy one hardware-wise for the young infielder.
It was announced Thursday that Henderson was named the MLBPA AL Outstanding Rookie for 2023. This honor is voted on by players around the major leagues.

Henderson became the first Orioles rookie to hit 20+ home runs, 20+ doubles, five + triples and 10+ stolen bases in a single season. On the year, Henderson slashed .255/.325/.489 with 28 home runs, 82 RBIs, 29 doubles, nine triples, 100 runs and 56 walks across 150 games.
Splitting time between both third base and shortstop, Henderson’s defensive prowess grew stronger as the season went on. Armed with above average range, a strong arm and quick reflexes, Henderson displayed the all-around talents that made him the former top prospect in all of baseball and the front-runner to win AL Rookie of the Year.
