To finish off the month of August and begin their last month of play, the Delmarva Shorebirds faced off against the Low-A affiliate for the Kansas City Royals, the Columbia Fireflies.
Just like their previous two series, the Shorebirds came away with three victories out of six games this week.
An offensive surge in this series led to 40 total runs scored for Delmarva. However, the usual pitching woes also led to 48 runs allowed.
Here are your final scores from this past week:
Game 1: DEL 8, COL 7
Game 2: DEL 3, COL 12
Game 3: DEL 13, COL 3
Game 4: DEL 4, COL 11
Game 5: DEL 7, COL 11
Game 6: DEL 5, COL 4
The last few weeks have been highlighted by exciting play from some newly acquired talent. Per usual, Enrique Bradfield Jr. was one of the most exciting.
Throughout his four games played this week, Bradfield Jr. hit safely in all four games, walked three times to just one strikeout and stole five bases.
On top of all of that, Bradfield Jr. delivered one of the most electric plays of the year, when he scored from second base on a sacrifice bunt. Yes, you read that correctly.
Another 2023 draft pick in Mac Horvath had maybe his best professional week. Horvath also hit safely in all five games he played, good for a total of eight.
He had four hits alone in game three, along with two walks and two stolen bases. In total, for the week, he had seven stolen bases. Horvath’s season OPS is now at 1.051.
The 2023 draft class truly has been remarkable for the Shorebirds, and Matthew Etzel may be the quietest one making a bunch of noise.
Etzel also hit safely in all four games he played, netting three extra-base hits, five RBIs and one walk in each of the four games. The 10th-round pick now has a .333 average with a .993 OPS in his first 25 professional games.
Unfortunately for the Shorebirds, however very exciting for these players, Bradfield Jr., Horvath and Etzel are set to make their way to High-A Aberdeen this week, as they were officially promoted. As said previously, all three are products of this year’s draft and already are beginning to make their way up the ranks of the minor league system.
Stiven Acevedo has also been red hot lately, and that didn’t change this week. In five games played, Acevedo netted five hits, three of them being home runs with eight RBIs.
Overall, the Shorebirds’ pitching staff struggled against the Fireflies lineup. A few appearances, however, kept the team in this series.
Teddy Sharkey continued his streak of not allowing a run to begin his professional career. He added another two-inning outing, which brings his season total to six innings with 12 strikeouts and a 0.67 WHIP.
Carter Baumler had another positive outing this week. He was stretched out to three innings again, this time allowing just one run on one hit. He did allow two walks. However, he did strike out three batters.
The Shorebirds return to action Tuesday against the Fredricksburg Nationals, the Low-A affiliate for the neighboring Washington Nationals. It’s the final series of the season for Delmarva, so head on out to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium to see the Baby Birds one last time in 2023.
