According to multiple industry sources, the Orioles have claimed old friend, right-hander Jorge López, off waivers from the Miami Marlins.

López, 30, is currently in his eighth big league season and was with the Orioles from 2020 to 2022. He was the team’s only All-Star during the 2022 season before being traded to the Minnesota Twins for right-handers Yennier Canó and Juan Nuñez and left-handers Cade Povich and Juan Rojas.

López this year has had an up and down season for Minnesota and Miami. He has pitched in 49 games and has a 6-2 record with a 6.13 ERA in 47 innings pitched. He has given up 54 hits, 32 earned runs, walked 20 batters and struck out 35 and has an opponent average of .295 and a WHIP of 1.57.

López’s tenure in Miami ends after a little more than two months, as the Fish acquired the righty from the Twins in late July for right-hander Dylan Floro.

The unfortunate part of this claim is that the Orioles had to designate right-hander Logan Gillaspie to make room for López on the 40-man roster. Gillaspie has bounced around between Triple-A and the big league club and carried a 6.00 ERA in 11 games this season.

The Orioles were just a day late on grabbing López, as he is not postseason eligible. Teams had until September 1 to grab players off waivers who could still be postseason eligible.
