The Norfolk Tides probably wishes they could just forget their most recent series against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, as they were almost swept.
Norfolk had a team ERA of 6.98 and a team WHIP of 1.80 for this series, and the offense was not much better, as they had a .232 average and a .670 OPS as a team.
Despite Norfolk’s poor collective play, four players individually stood out in the series.
JOEY ORTIZ – INF
Our own Justin Sutphin will love to see that Joey Ortiz really showed out this week and continues to dominate at the Triple-A level. Ortiz played in all six games and slashed .292/.370/.333 with a .736 OPS. He had seven hits, including a double, as he knocked in four.
In 71 games in Norfolk thos season, Ortiz has a .349 average with a .953 OPS and 98 total hits. The New Mexico State product has collected 25 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 49 RBIs and also has 10 stolen bases and has walked 25 times.
COBY MAYO – INF
In this series, especially, Coby Mayo was the best hitter for Norfolk on the statistical side. In five games, Mayo had a .294 average and a .429 on base percentage, tallying five total hits, three doubles and one absolute blast of a home run. He also had four walks for the series.
Mayo has not been the same as he was in Bowie since being called up to Norfolk, as he currently has a .205 batting average and only has 18 total hits during his time in Triple-A.
CHAYCE MCDERMOTT – RHP
Chayce McDermott is maybe the best arm at the Triple-A level since he was called up. He proved his dominance against Jacksonville despite his game being a no decision. McDermott started one game and went five innings of two-hit baseball, giving up one run while striking out six.
Since being called up to Norfolk, McDermott has pitched in five games and is currently 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA. He has pitched 24 innings and has only given up nine hits and five earned runs, walking 11 and striking out 31. The most impressive stat, though, is that McDermott has held batters to a .115 batting average, as he currently has a 0.83 WHIP.
AUSTIN VOTH – RHP
Austin Voth pitched in two games and went five innings of shutout ball. He only gave up four hits, walked three batters and struck out 11. He picked up a hold in this series.
Since rehabbing from his elbow injury, Voth has been great in Norfolk. In the four games he has pitched, he has a 2.70 ERA in 6.2 innings of work. The veteran right-hander has given up seven hits, two earned runs and has struck out 13 batters.
Norfolk starts another road series against the Memphis Redbirds starting on August 15. They will be greeted by a new/former teammate, as outfielder Colton Cowser was officially optioned down, as outfielder Aaron Hicks is now back on the main roster from his hamstring injury.
