The Delmarva Shorebirds split their series against Lynchburg Hillcats despite having a fundamentally sound stretch of play.

Delmarva had a .632 OPS as a team for this series, with 40 total hits in 180 at-bats for a .222 batting average. They collected four doubles, three triples, three home runs and 22 RBIs for the series.

Delmarva’s pitching is what really took this team over the hill. With a team ERA of five and 30 earned runs, the pitching really shut it down over the weekend while on the three-game win streak.

While the Shorebirds looked overall better this week, three players really stood out in the series.

STIVEN ACEVEDO – OF

Stiven Acevedo has been the lead-off hitter for Delmarva for most of the year, mainly due to him being one of the more reliable hitters on the team. Acevedo played in all six games and slashed .286/.444/.619 with a 1.063 OPS in 21 at-bats. He collected six hits, one double, two home runs in the same game and five RBIs. He walked six times to seven strikeouts while also stealing five bases in six attempts.

Acevedo now has a .707 OPS in 76 games for Delmarva. He has 71 total hits, 15 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 32 RBIs. As one of the players that has been on Delmarva’s roster all year, Acevedo needs to get more looks, especially since he has 26 stolen bases in 34 attempts.

CARTER YOUNG – INF

CARTER YOUNG BREAKOUT SEASON IS UPON US! Young was someone who was highly-liked in college and somehow fell to the Orioles in the 17th round last year. In six games, Young slashed .292/.308/.333 with a .641 OPS, picking up seven hits, one double, three RBIs and swiping two bases in two attempts.

While his season numbers leave much to be desired, Young is still someone who should not be as slept on as he is currently. The Vandy product has a .644 OPS but still has totaled 80 hits and 19 extra base hits, earning him a promotion to High-A Aberdeen.

JUAN DE LOS SANTOS – RHP

Juan De Los Santos is the only pitcher that put together a good series on the mound. The Dominican native pitched in two games this series, starting both and giving up just three hits in 10.2 scoreless innings. He only walked one batter and struck out seven.

The 21-year-old has been struggling this season, as he currently has a 4.09 ERA and a record of 1-7. But De Los Santos has nasty pitches, and with some work this offseason could be seen as a top pitching prospect in the organization.

Delmarva’s next series starts on Tuesday, August 8, against the Carolina Mudcats. The Shorebirds are currently 15-20 in the second half and are in last place in the North Division of the Carolina League, sitting 7.5 games back.
