For the third time in four months, Baltimore Orioles closer Félix “The Mountain” Bautista has taken home AL Releiver of the Month honors.
The previous two honors were due to very strong performances, but July just might have been Bautista’s most dominant yet.
In earning this honor for the third time on the season, Bautista accumulated more saves (8) in July than base runners allowed (7). The Orioles’ best releiver is putting up video-game-like numbers in an era of baseball designed to promote offense.
For July, Bautista was 3-0 with eight saves (eight opportunities) across 11 games. He totaled 14 innings, allowing zero runs. He struck out 25 of the 33 batters he faced (three hits, one hit batter and four walks). He threw 190 pitches with 68.4% going for strikes (130).
For the season, Bautista is now 6-1 with 29 saves in 34 chances. He has an ERA of 0.87 with a WHIP of 0.85 in 47 games. Across 51.2 innings of work, he has allowed just 23 hits, with a 101:21 strikeout to walk ratio, and opponents are batting a measley .131 while yielding just four extra base hits against the right-hander.
