We are three months through the MiLB season and are close to finishing up the first half.
The Orioles’ farm system continues to be the best in baseball, and that showed heavily in the month of June. From red hot bats to flamethrowers on the mound, the O’s had a lot to be proud of this past month.
Five O’s prospects really showed out this month, and we’re going to highlight them, as we do every single month. Let’s dive right into it.
LOW-A DELMARVA: SAMUEL BASALLO – C
The newest MLB top 100 prospect had a June that made him look unstoppable at the plate. Basallo slashed .309/.411/.543 with a .954 OPS in 22 games, 81 at-bats.
Basallo had 25 total hits, four doubles, five home runs and 12 RBIs while also scoring 17 runs. The 18-year-old Dominican also stole three bases and walked 14 times.
Basallo continues a season where he has a .855 OPS and 10 total home runs. He has 77 total hits this season with 55 RBIs in 259 at-bats, 67 games, all with the Delmarva Shorebirds.
Honorable Mention: Trendon Craig – OF
HIGH-A ABERDEEN: TRACE BRIGHT – RHP
The pitching depth gets better and better the more digging we do into the prospects that the Orioles have. That includes Trace Bright, who had an impressive month of June with Aberdeen.
Bright pitched and started five games and carried a 2.86 ERA over 22 total innings pitched. Bright gave up 13 hits, seven earned runs, 14 walks and tallied 31 strikeouts. He also had a 1.23 WHIP and held batters to a .169 batting average.
Bright continues a season where he has a 4.64 ERA in 54.1 innings pitched with a 1.34 WHIP. The 22-year-old has slowed down a little since his great start to the season, and while the numbers aren’t popping off, Bright is someone who seems to be on the path to the Orioles’ rotation in the near future.
Honorable Mention: Daniel Lloyd – RHP
DOUBLE-A BOWIE: BILLY COOK – OF
Let him cook! Billy Cook has found his groove, and it showed in the month of June.
In 23 games, Cook slashed .330/.375/.534 with a .909 OPS in 88 at-bats. The 24-year-old outfielder had 29 hits, six doubles, four home runs and 13 RBIs. Cook also had seven walks, stole eight bases and scored 12 runs.
Cook now has a season where he has a .742 OPS and 61 total hits in 242 at-bats. He’s collected eight home runs, 36 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.
Honorable Mention: Ofreidy Gomez – RHP
TRIPLE-A NORFOLK: GRAYSON RODRIGUEZ – RHP
Now, I know. Grayson Rodriguez is not considered a prospect nowadays. However, Rodriguez’s month of June is one thing that can not be swept under a rug.
Rodriguez started five games where he went 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched. He gave up 18 hits, seven earned runs, walked 12 batters and struck out 39. He also held batters to a .184 batting average and had a WHIP of 1.06.
Rodriguez continues to grab confidence to get him back to the Orioles’ rotation while also earning International League Pitcher of the Month honors for June.
Honorable Mention: Heston Kjerstad – OF
OVERALL PROSPECT OF THE MONTH: COBY MAYO – INF
Coby Mayo just doesn’t go away when talking about great prospects, especially with the month of June he had.
In 26 total games, Mayo slashed .340/.467/.711 with a 1.178 OPS in 97 at-bats. The 21-year-old had 33 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 18 RBIs for the month. Mayo also had 20 walks and stole two bases.
Mayo, this season, is carrying a .315 average and a 1.054 OPS in 276 at-bats. He’s collected 87 total hits, 17 home runs and 44 RBIs. Mayo’s month led to him to Eastern League Player of the Month honors.
