The Orioles are having a season to remember. From top to bottom, the awards keep coming, and the big league club is the latest to collect some hardware from Major League Baseball.
It was announced earlier today that right-hander Félix Bautista was named AL Releiver of the Month (his second win this year), and Gunnar Henderson was named AL Rookie of the Month.
Bautista is having one heck of a year so far. Already claiming one Releiver of the Month honor and recently being named an All-Star, Bautista is building a mountain (pun intended) of hardware.
During the month of June, Bautista appeared in 10 games, totaling 10.2 innings of work. “The Mountain” would convert 7-of-8 save opportunities while posting a 0.84 ERA and .158 opponents batting average.
What was more impressive was that he had a WHIP of 0.58, striking out 22 batters with zero walks. Bautista threw a total of 160 pitches, with 70.6% of them going for strikes.
For the season, the 6’8″ righty is now 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA across 38.2 innings. He has converted 22-of-27 save opportunities and has struck out an amazing 79 of the 154 batters he has faced. Opponents are hitting just .147, as Bautista has produced a 0.96 WHIP on the year.
On the flip side, the early Rookie of the Year favorite in Gunnar Henderson got off to a slow start to the season but has come on strong as of late. Henderson was able to snap Rangers rookie third baseman Josh Jung’s streak of Rookie of Month awards by hitting .320 across the month of June.
In 20 games, the 22-year-old infielder slashed .320/.354/.640, hitting six home runs and driving in 16. He collected 24 total hits, including four doubles and a triple, while scoring 10 runs and stealing three bases.
Henderson shared time between shortstop and third base and helped provide a spark from the lead-off spot while Cedric Mullins went on the injured list with a groin strain. Henderson looks to continue his pace, which saw him raise his batting average .027 points over the course of the month.
As these young players continue to grow, the accolades and awards should continue to follow. We want to congratulate Félix Bautista and Gunnar Henderson on their accomplishments and look forward to the many that will follow.
