The Delmarva Shorebirds won their series against the Augusta GreenJackets three games to two, with one game postponed. The Shorebirds had help from good contact bats on offense and somewhat rare lights-out pitching on the mound.
In the five games that the Shorebirds played, the offense slashed .275/.359/.433 with a .792 OPS. They had 47 total hits, nine doubles, six home runs and 20 RBIs. They also had 22 walks and went 12-for-14 in stolen bases.
The pitching staff put together a 2.74 ERA and had a K/9 of 11.93. Yes, you read that correctly. The Delmarva Shorebirds did that.
Let’s take a look at the individuals who stood out this week for Delmarva.
SAMUEL BASALLO – C
I swear Samuel Basallo gets better and better as the season continues. The kid had an amazing series against Augusta and continues a great month of June so far.
In five games, Basallo slashed .444/.565/.778 with a 1.343 OPS in 18 at-bats. He had eight total hits, seven runs, six RBIs and two home runs that actually were in the same game. Basallo now has an average over .300 this season and a .315 average for the month.
ZACK SHOWALTER – RHP
The newcomer to the team put on a show in his Delmarva debut. Showalter was a star to start the season off in FCL Rookie Ball and is now starting to become a staple for the Shorebirds.
Showalter started one game and went 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, one earned run, two walks and three strikeouts. Showalter looks to be a probable ace for this Delmarva staff.
TRENDON CRAIG – OF
Trendon Craig has turned his season around and has been insane at the plate. Craig, in the series against Augusta, looked like the next big contact hitter in the O’s farm system.
Craig only played in four games but slashed .471/.500/.765 with a 1.265 OPS in 17 at-bats. He had eight total hits, two runs, five singles, two doubles and one home run. He tallied six RBIs, one walk and went 3-for-3 in stolen bases and now has a season OPS over .900.
ALFRED VEGA – RHP
Alfred Vega is a name that might need to be known more in the O’s farm system, especially after the game he had against the GreenJackets this week.
Vega went four innings of no-run baseball, giving up five hits, one walk and struck out five. The righty has brought his ERA down to 4.97 on the season, but he has been streaky all year.
Delmarva is now 28-37 on the season and 11 games back of first place in their division. First place is already locked up by the Down East Wood Ducks for the first half of the season.
Delmarva’s next series will be against the Lynchburg Hillcats in Lynchburg, Virginia. The first game will be on Wednesday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m. EST.
