So, it’s unfortunate but true. Coby Mayo’s 33-game (yes, you read that correctly) on-base streak ended on June 21 during the first game of a doubleheader between Bowie and Altoona.
The on-base streak started on May 13, when Mayo smacked a single into center field, and 33 games later, it ended with him going 0-for-3 in a seven-inning game.
The fourth-round pick in 2020 has had an amazing minor league career thus far. In 219 total career games, Mayo has slashed .277/.375/.511 with a .886 OPS. He has 220 total hits, 56 doubles, five triples and 40 home runs with 146 RBIs.
While his career has been pretty complete when you throw in his fantastic defense at third base, this 33-game on-base streak is something that will define his career.
Between the times of May 13 and June 20, Mayo slashed .325/.432/.642 with a 1.075 OPS. He had 40 total hits, 13 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 24 RBIs. He also had 21 walks to 42 strikeouts and was hit by a pitch three times.
The stat line put Mayo on an almost 40 home run pace per 162 games and was looking at almost 200 hits. But this on-base streak completely turned his season around for the better.
Mayo is arguably having his best season this far, and if it wasn’t for this stretch, his numbers wouldn’t have increased as dramatically as they did. I’ll show you.
