This past week, our Delmarva Shorebirds traveled to Fredricksburg to face the Nationals’ Low-A affiliate once again.

All around, it was once again not a great series from the Shorebirds. They dropped five of the six games and only scored more than three runs in two of those games.

Here are the final scores from this week:

Game one: DEL 1, FBG 2

Game two: DEL 2, FBG 9

Game three: DEL 7, FBG 8

Game four: DEL 7, FBG 3

Game five: DEL 1, FBG 7

Game six: DEL 3, FBG 4

Much like when Jackson Holliday graduated to High-A Aberdeen, the Shorebirds find themselves with a decent sized hole left by the absence of Creed Willems.

Despite this hole, Samuel Basallo continues to rake at the plate, as he is certainly the purest hitter on this team. A few other bats have been coming around as of late, including an underrated prospect named Isaac Bellony.

In this series, Basallo hit safely six times in 20 attempts while playing in all six games. This sounds impressive for somebody his age who is also a catcher. However, a week like this is around the norm for Basallo. Of those six hits, one was a home run, as he netted four RBI.

One slight issue Basallo has shown this year, which is minor and fixable, is a somewhat high strikeout rate. This week, he has nine K’s to just two walks.

Isaac Bellony did a wonderful job filling that aforementioned void this week. He was the highlight of the series, going 9-for-23 with two doubles, two triples and five RBIs.

Carter Young was another bat this week who delivered. Young went 7-for-17 with a double and a home run. This was a great start to the month of June, which is following a big May turnaround for the 22-year-old infielder.

This feels like a broken record, but I’ll say it again. The pitching for the Shorebirds simply wasn’t great. Besides two very bad appearances, it wasn’t awful. However, there wasn’t one outing that stood out as great either.

Hugo Beltran had four strikeouts in three relief appearances while only allowing one run in his action this week. Wyatt Cheney earned the team one win in his five-inning outing that included two strikeouts.

Juan De Los Santos continued to struggle, as he allowed five runs, only one of which was earned, in his inning and two-thirds of work. This raises his season ERA to 5.45 in 36.1 innings pitched.

The Shorebirds look to get back on track in their next series, as they face the Texas Rangers’ Low-A affiliate, the Down East Wood Ducks. Yes, that’s really their name.
