Around the Nest: Edition 8 – Trey Mancini sticking to Birdland promises

As a Baltimore Orioles fan, we have seen our fair share of homegrown talent come and go.

There have been players who excelled after they left, some who got better before being traded and some we fell in love with because of who they were as a human being.

Any fan of the Orioles watched Trey Mancini become a Charm City favorite through successful times but become a loyal Bird through the toughest of times.

On top of the devotion he showed to our city and team, he captivated the nation as he returned from Stage-3 Colon Cancer. He returned to hit 20 home runs in 2021 but caught the hearts of the nation as he finished runner-up in the All-Star Home Run Derby.

During the 2022 season, Mancini was traded to the Houston Astros to help aid them to another World Series Championship, which was accomplished. Recently, as a free agent, Mancini would sign a two-year deal in the Windy City to play for the Chicago Cubs.

As we all want the best for Mancini, it was tough for us to see the fan favorite depart for greener pastures. Though he wanted to finish what was started in Charm City, he understood the reasoning behind the move and ultimately earned a ring in the process.

For those who do not know, The Trey Mancini Foundation works to support those facing illness and empowers those who are suffering.

Mancini gave thanks to the Preston Automotive Group, who, after Mancini was traded, still fulfilled their promise to fill 144 backpacks for Blessings in a Backpack, one backpack for each hit Mancini would have in 2022.

The Trey Mancini Foundation sponsored the Ty Cobb Senior League Home Run Derby for the second year in a row in 2022. Mancini and his team were able to raise over $3,000 and donate all the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.

The Trey Mancini Foundation put out a post on social media showing appreciation for the support from the Baltimore community.

The post informed fans of Baltimore that The Trey Mancini Foundation would still fund the Brooklyn O’Mally Boys and Girls Club in Baltimore with Blessings in a Backpack in the future.

Though Mancini has moved on in his career, the fans of Baltimore will always hold a special place in their hearts for Trey. We were there in the beginning, we were there during his fight and recovery from cancer and we will be there always.

Mancini may not be a Baltimore Oriole, but he will forever be a member of the Birdland community and still garner our support. We wish Mancini well on his career journey.
